Man fails to register as sex offender

Bernardo Pacheco-Castaneda was a passenger in a vehicle which was stopped for a broken headlight and license plate lamp.

He was taken to Douglas County Jail on $5,000 cash bail and placed on hold by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Speaking through an interpreter, Pacheco-Castenada told East Fork Justice Jim EnEarl on Wednesday that he had recently returned from Mexico and hadn't registered.

The defendant also asked if he could pay a fine, but EnEarl said no.

Pacheco-Castaneda is to appear in East Fork Justice Court on Aug. 15.

According to court documents, Pacheco-Castaneda was convicted April 19, 2001, of statutory sexual seduction and had been deported.

"He's been deported several times," prosecutor Michael McCormick said.
