Washing dogs helps shelter

While this past year I have been interviewing each of our volunteer firefighters with the Ruhenstroth Volunteer Fire Department in an effort to introduce them to our neighbors and the rest of the community, I would be remiss if I didn't take the time to offer thanks to the wives, significant others and remaining family members that are the backbone of any volunteer organization. Without the support of family, the volunteers would not be able to be effective and the system would not run as smoothly as it does.

Senior center plans activities for this week

On Thursday, the Douglas County Senior Center is having a special barbecue luncheon with a Hawaiian luau theme. Depending upon the weather, it will be held at Lampe Park unless it is too hot, then it will be at the senior center. Entertainment, food, games and prizes are being planned. Seniors are encouraged to dress in Hawaiian attire to celebrate the occasion. Bingo will be held after lunch.

The water level at Topaz Lake is dropping rapidly. But here are two kids still jumping off the rope and into the water. Michael Peterson and Madison Meek were both camping here with their families from California. Madison was so brave; she climbed up the edge of the tree to get a higher jump out into the water.

Yosemite not the wilderness it was, but still fun

here are several ways to make an entrance into Yosemite Valley. A parachute would be the best choice but is frowned on. Other options, Highway 41 from Fresno passes through a long tunnel to a staggeringly beautiful view of El Capitan, Half Dome and Bridal Veil Falls.

This year's Sierra Nevada Active 20-30 Club shopping spree was a huge success, and of course, one of the most rewarding hands-on events we do all year. Sierra Nevada No. 730 raised $3,700 with the assistance of the men's Carson Valley Active 20-30 No. 85 club, and both clubs were able to take 37 children shopping.

Senior center hike a fun adventure

Once a month throughout the summer, the Douglas County Senior Center organizes a hike at one of the innumerable beautiful spots in and around the Carson Valley. In June, Ranchos residents Mario and Judy Giallongo participated in an excursion to Hot Springs Creek Falls (also known as Markleeville Falls), just outside of Grover's Hot Springs.

Remember Bob Ross? It seemed like every time you saw someone painting on public television, it was Bob Ross. The bushy-haired painter with the soft voice that encouraged viewers to paint "happy little clouds" and "pretty little mountains" has since passed away, but his painting methods live on. Three non-credit, community-service classes are being offered at Western Nevada Community College this fall that teach oil painting using the Bob Ross "wet on wet" method.

Remembering Nyle

For the few years I have lived in Topaz Ranch Estates I had many occasion to drive east on Topaz Ranch Road. There was a sign that always caught my eye as I drove down the road. It said "Berth of the Nations." However, this retrospective show will surprise a lot of people as it covers not only the Valley interests and painting, but the years before she moved here. 'Miracle dog' lives through injuries from hit-and-run

If it weren't for bad luck, Scott Seacrest would have no luck at all in the last couple of weeks. Seacrest was camping in the Hope Valley area. His van broke down, his trailer got a flat tire and his dog, Doucette, was the victim of a hit-and-run on the bridge crossing the west Carson River near Hope Valley Resort on Friday.

The Nevada State Sporting Clay Competition will be Aug. 9-13. This event is open to the public. For members of the National Sporting Clay Association this is a sanctioned event. For non-members there is a Hunter Class entry. Registration is open 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 9-11 during the preliminaries and 7 a.m. to noon the morning of the main event Aug. 12. Cost for 100 Birds Saturday and Sunday is $150.

St. Gall rummage sale nears

St. Gall Catholic Church, 1343 Centerville Lane in Gardnerville, is in final preparation for the Annual Awesome Rummage Sale. The volunteers are in the process of moving 8,000-square-feet of furniture from the Park Ranch to the church parking lot.
