Traffic light advocates plan rally at Capitol

Supporters of a traffic light at Stephanie Way and Highway 395 will be demonstrating in Carson City on Saturday.

More than 5,000 signatures have been gathered on a petition for Gov. Kenny Guinn in support of a traffic light at Highway 395 and Stephanie Way, where Bridget Chambers was killed in a July 15 accident.

Bridget's mother, Terri Chambers, said she hopes to get several hundred people out on Saturday for the demonstration.

"We've talked to Carson Valley Christian Center and they e-mailed 800 of their parishioners and we got the high school to participate," Chambers said Monday. "A lot of people expressed that they would have participated in our last protest, but it was on a work day. There are a lot of people who have been watching this story and are emotional about the issue and want to be there on Saturday."

Organizers plan to be in the Capitol Square just south of the Capitol at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

Chambers said she hasn't received much in the way of support from either the Nevada Department of Transportation or the Governor's Office.

"We can't get anywhere with NDOT or the governor," she said. "We want to get as many people as possible out there to put some pressure on them and maybe get some television coverage."

Chambers said she has strong feelings on the subject.

"I feel like I'm in a better position to help," she said. "I'm more focused, and I'm angry. It's disrespectful that we should be ignored to the degree that the community has been ignored. This is not about a memorial for my child, it's about making sure the road is safe so it doesn't happen again."

Demonstrators are encouraged to bring placards. For information, contact Chambers at 783-9906.
