Community Associations Institute, Nevada chapter, held its fourth annual Heroes Luncheon to recognize public safety officers, military members and civilians that have made a positive impact in the community.
The association awarded honorees in 11 different categories that included police officers, firefighters and civilians, as well as an Air Force unit stationed at Nellis Air Force Base and a local sports organization. Each of the honorees has either gone above and beyond without regard for their own safety or strived to make improvements to their community.
Michael Barnes of Douglas County was among those honored. Barnes was recognized for his efforts to restore and revitalize the Empire Cemetery in Carson City. The cemetery was severely damaged. But with more than 170 hours of donated time, Barnes, 16, restored headstones and constructed a photographic and written exhibit of the former mining town of Empire, including the city's early inhabitants and its founder.
