Red Cross makes house calls

Appointments for services available to hurricane victims or others needing aid from the American Red Cross can be made by calling 856-1000.

Once an appointment is made area volunteers can meet with families wherever they are staying.

Volunteers from Dayton, Minden and Gardnerville also provide on-site services to families following fires or other emergencies.

Singles group seeks blood donors

Nevada Singles Social Club will be doing a small part for the community by donating blood from 10 a.m.-noon Sunday at United Blood Services, 256 E. Winnie Lane.

Reservations should be called to either Junette Kelly 841-1329 or directly to the United Blood Services, 887-9111.

A light lunch will be provided and a gift certificate will be given to a lucky member of the club.

Lake Tahoe

Volunteers needed for forest stewardship

The League to Save Lake Tahoe will host its 8th Tahoe Forest Stewardship Day in collaboration with the Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California starting at noon Sunday at the Washoe-operated Meeks Bay Resort (west shore of Lake Tahoe).

The public is invited to participate in a day of hands-on forest and stream restoration activities while learning more about key environmental issues facing the Tahoe Basin.

After a day of work, volunteers will receive a T-shirt and a free barbecue.

All ages are invited.

Garage sale to help hurricane victims

A Hurricane Katrina benefit multi-family garage sale will be from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at 7395 Bryan Canyon Road (off the south end of Franktown Road in Washoe Valley).

All proceeds will be donated to the Red Cross to benefit hurricane victims.

BLM offers wild horses for adoption

The next wild horse adoption will be Saturday at Palomino Valley. Yearling fillies and geldings and 2- and 3-year-old mares and geldings will be featured.

The center will open at 8 a.m. with a silent bid adoption scheduled for 10 to 11 a.m.

Bids will only be accepted from qualified adopters, and begin at $125 per animal.

Wild horses not adopted in the morning will be offered afterward on a first-come, first-serve basis until 2 p.m.

Stock trailers with side-swinging gates are preferred.

Drop ramps are not acceptable.

Individuals are asked to bring a halter and lead rope appropriate for the size and kind of animals adopted.

To qualify to adopt, an individual must be at least 18 years old; however, parents or guardians may adopt and allow younger family members to care for the animal.
