Carson City

Steak fryin' slated for Democratic Women's Club

The Carson City Democratic Women's Club is holding a steak fry from 1-4 p.m. Sunday at 1001 Arrowhead Drive. Cost is $25 per person and will include dinner and a beverage. There will also be a raffle.

Toy drive to benefit Katrina's young refugees

First Presbyterian Church in Opelika, Ala., began a toy drive for refugee children in their community and the surrounding areas as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Mountain Springs Assisted Living, 2861 N. Mountain St., is the drop-off point for donations in Carson City.

They are accepting children's books, small toys, small stuffed animals, coloring books and crayons, markers, school supplies, fleece throws, etc. (but nothing large, please). Items will be shipped to a church congregation member for direct distribution to the shelters. Any extra items will be saved for Christmas gifts.

Skateboard competition Saturday at Lee Park

Indian Hills G.I.D. Recreation Department is holding a skateboard competition from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at James Lee Park in Indian Hills.

There will be a $100 prize given for the best trick in the Jam Format/Open Division and first, second and third prizes in each age division.

There is a $10 entry fee and a parent/guardian must sign a waiver. Helmets and pads are required to compete.

Guides to talk about flyfishing in the Sierra

The High Sierra Fly Casters will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Kahle Community Center, 236 Kingsbury Grade, Stateline. Victor Babbitt, of Tahoe Fly-fishing Outfitters, will host the event and feature several of his guides discussing High Sierra flyfishing.

Valley artists meet at library to view video

The Carson Valley Art Association meets at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the Minden Library.

The program will be a video of Reno artist Kim Kimerling on mono-printing. Refreshments will be served. For information, call 783-9626

Trail trial to celebrate National Lands Day

The Nevada All State Trail Riders will celebrate National Lands Day Saturday with a trail trial for horse and rider.

Proceeds from the trial will go toward improvements to the equestrian area of Washoe Lake State Park.

The trail starts at 11 a.m. and features a variety of obstacles scattered around the park.

The ride length will be approximately eight miles with eight obstacles. The performance of each horse and rider team will be monitored by a trail judge and scored on a point system.

Obstacles will be things horses normally negotiate on urban trails as well as those found out in the natural landscape.

The entry fee is $30 for adults and $20 for children 16 and under. Helmets are required for junior riders. There will be a T-shirt award and lunch for all participants.
