A limit at Upper Blue Lake before finishing first beer

BISHOP, CALIF. AREA: Gary Olson of the Bishop Creek Resorts (760-873-4484):

Intake No. 2: Has been one of the better fishing areas all summer and continued that way this week, again.

Several float tubers reporting good results with olive Woolly Bugger and red-throated Woolly Worms.

North Lake: Lots of stringers coming out with green Stingers with a tan tail, floating them with a bobber about 3 feet off the surface and slowly retrieving with an occasional jerking action.

South Lake: DF&G and Alpers both stocked this week.

Trolling with a Rip'N Minnow or long Rapala lure have continued to do well on the Rockslide.

Bishop Creek: Fishing has been good.

Nightcrawlers and Salmon eggs were the keys this weekend.

Rainbow glitter Power Bait was very good around the Tyee Lakes Bridge and through Table Mt. Campground.

BISHOP, CALIF. AREA: Patti Apted of the Lake Sabrina Boat Landing (760-873-7425):

Sabrina Lake: There's a nip in the air.

There is a bit more yellow showing on the Aspens this week and a possible dusting of that white stuff is in the forecast for next week.

Fishing this week was fair with some nice limits of pan-size fish.

Best was at the inlets with worms or Power Bait Ð Orange or Rainbow.

The trollers used flashers and a worm or the Red and Gold Thomas Buoyant.

Drift anglers caught their limits using Power Bait or worms off the points of the lake.

The big fish of the week was a real nice 5.5 pounder back at the inlet.

BLUE LAKES AREA, CALIF: Dave Kirby of the Woodfords Station (530-694-2930):

Upper Blue Lake: "I had a guy tell me that he caught his limit of rainbows on nightcrawlers from shore before he could finish his first beer."

Lower Blue Lake: "Is really low, right now, as they keep drawing the water out."

BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR, CALIF: Rick Giser of Ken's Sporting Goods Store (760-932-7707) (at 11 a.m.): It is still fishing well, but not quite as hot as before.

They are picking up a lot of fish in the Buckeye Bay area.

The water is starting to clear up due to the lower temps.

You might want to start trolling in the near future.

BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR, CALIF: Jeffry Wenger of the Bridgeport Reservoir RV Park and Marina (888-377-1677) reported: "Fishing is still very productive for all the bait guys and gals and for all the fly-junkies.

After a bit of a slow-down last week, lots of limits were coming in over the Labor Day weekend, with average sizes running 13-23 inches.

Getting to the channels, because of weeds, grass and low water in Buckeye Bay (where we have seen so much success this year) is proving more difficult.

The shelf just to the East is loaded up with toad-size footballs! Also, Rainbow Point, off the Blue House and the Narrows by the dam are seeing a lot of fish.

This past week, nightcrawlers and/or Power Bait (orange, green or rainbow), or lures is the way to go.

Try trolling deep and in the channel towards the Dam, as the Browns are getting hungry.

Fly fishing is happening: Try indicator techniques using midge imitations, size 18 or 20 or AP's, Scud's, San Juan's or Hare's Ears.

For you adventurous types, try maneuvering your boat up into the East Walker channel just to the West of the runway. Yikes!

CAPLES LAKE, CALIF: Dave Kirby reported that Mike Day of Woodfords caught a 6-pound rainbow on Saturday from a float tube with a 3/8 ounce Krocodile lure.

CARSON RIVERS, CALIF:

East Carson River: Brad Davis of the Carson River Resort (877-694-2229):

On Sept. 3, David Runyon caught a 6-pound, 9-ounce rainbow on a yellow body with gold blade Panther/Martin lure.

At the bridge at Woodfords, Gabriel Aguiler of Sacto caught a 6-pound, 4-ounce rainbow on a Woolly Bugger fly with a spinning rod.

At the bridge at Woodfords, Charles Aranda of Sacto caught a 4.5 pound rainbow on a Panther/Martin lure.

West Carson River: Dave Kirby reported lots of fish were caught, due to the heavy plants last week.

A 7.5 pound rainbow on Salmon eggs by Ross McKenzie, a teenager, of Woodfords.

A 6-pound rainbow on Sunday with a brown Woolly Bugger fly by Bruce Waggoner of Minden.

CONVICT LAKE, CALIF: The Convict Lake resort reported:

Convict Lake: A 3.78 pound rainbow on a gold Phobe lure from the north shore, a 3.71 pound rainbow on a nightcrawler from the south shore and a 3.2 pound rainbow on a nightcrawler at the outlet.

HEENAN LAKE, CALIF: Dave Kirby said that he had good reports for the Opening Day on Friday.

Lots of fishermen and lots of success, both from shore and from float tubes.

A number of Cutthroat trout caught that were bigger than 4 pounds.

Note: This lake is open only on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays until Oct. 30.

KIRMAN (AKA CARMEN) LAKE, CALIF: Rick Giser reported that the fishing has been very good for lots of Cutthroat trout for fly fishermen in float tubes. The fish are running mostly 15-16 inches with some up to 26 inches.

Note: This lake is about a 2 mile hike from the Sonora Pass Highway (S. R. 108).

LAHONTAN RESERVOIR, NEV: Missy Swain at Burke's Market at Silver Springs (775-577-2750): "There were quite a few fishermen over the weekend.

We have a photo of an incredible 16-pound, 6-ounce Catfish caught on Aug. 31 on minnows from shore at Beach No. 12 by a John French (hometown unknown).

There was a Carp tournament over the weekend and I heard that the biggest was 8.5 pounds."

SACRAMENTO RIVER, CALIF: Kirk Portocarrero of Outdoor Adventures Sport Fishing, Redding, Calif. (800-670-4448) reported:

Redding to Anderson: Water flows at 8,500 CFS.

Rainbow Trout:

Fly fishing is good. Catching and releasing many nice rainbows, 2-6 pounds.

Using No. 14 or No. 16 Pheasant tail flies. Micro May Fly patterns were working well.

Drifting Redding to Anderson, mornings and evenings are great.

Spin fishing is good with Glo Bugs and Crickets.

King Salmon:

Is fair to good. Catching 1-4 fish per day.

Catching nice Kings in the Balls Ferry area, using Flatfish lures and bouncing roe.

Salmon are 15-30 pounds, bright-colored.

Definitely a late year for the Salmon returning to the Sac this year.

SILVER LAKE, CALIF: Linda Thorbjornson at Kay's Silver Lake Resort (209-258-8598): "Fishing has been good and most of the people are now gone for the summer.

A 10-pound Mackinaw on Aug. 30, while trolling a Wobbler lure.

A 7-pound rainbow on Sept. 2, while trolling a flashers and a nightcrawler.

A 7-pound rainbow on Sept. 4 on a gold Kastmaster lure from shore.

SHASTA LAKE, CALIF: Kirk Portocarrero reported he and his clients are fishing a combo trip on the lake, fishing for salmon and trout.

Fishing is great, they are catching nice Rainbow trout, 2-6 pounds, 80 ft deep, trolling, using shad pattern lures.

Fishing around the Digger Bay area and main body of lake.

Stampede Reservoir, Calif: Dick Murphy of "Fishing with Father Murphy" reported that the Kokanee fishing is beginning to get good.

Troll from the boat ramp toward the right side of the "Island" at a depth of 60-70 feet in water 120-130 feet deep.

Use a "Lollipop" Murph's Kokanee Bug with a kernel of corn on the tip of the hook.

On Monday, they caught a total of 11 Kokanee that were 17-19 inches long.

The Kokanee are starting to turn red with their spawning colors.

LAKE TAHOE - North Shore:

Mickey Daniels of Mickey's Big Mack Charters (800-877-1462): "The fishing has been excellent on every trip. We've been catching our Mackinaw trout early in the morning and tagging and releasing the smaller ones.

We're catching lots of fish, but nothing super big.

I am trolling the deep-water area in front of Carnelian Bay and King's Beach with silver Herring Dodger flasher blades with live minnows or large Apex lures."

LAKE TAHOE - North Shore:

Gene St. Denis of Blue Ribbon Charters and Tahoe Trophy Trout at South Lake Tahoe, Calif. (530-544-6552): "The Tahoe City Shelf, Agate Bay, Cal Neva Point and Dollar Point have all been excellent, early in the morning, slower in the afternoons.

We're catching lots of fish, with easy limits.

We are trolling for Macks with silver Herring Dodger flasher blades and live minnows at depths of 100-250 feet, along the edges of the drop-offs."

LAKE TAHOE - South Shore: Gene St. Denis: "Fishing is good.

Best places have been Ski Run Mound and Camp Richardson.

We are trolling 150-250 feet deep with silver Herring Dodger flasher blades and live minnows."

LAKE TAHOE - East Shore:

Gene St. Denis: "Fishing has been good.

We are trolling silver Herring Dodger flasher blades and live minnows at a depth of 150-250 feet.

Working the Cave Rock Shelf for Macks. Most are 1-4 pounds."

TOPAZ LAKE: Chuck Fields at the Topaz Lake Marina (775-266-3550) reported, "It's the same report as the last few weeks. It is really slow out here.

Not very many fishermen and they aren't catching any fish.

No one is coming in with anything."

Note: Topaz Lake will close for 2005 fishing on Sept. 30.

TWIN LAKES, CALIF:

Upper Twin Lake: Annett's Mono Village (760-932-7071) (Ask for the boat house): Orange Power Bait working well around the inlets for pan-sized stringers.

A 5-pound, 11-ounce rainbow on a nightcrawler for Sarah Nielsen of Gardnerville.

In addition, a 5-pound 4-ounce rainbow on a silver Jake and a 4-pound, 4-ounce rainbow on rainbow Power Bait.

VIRGINIA LAKES, CALIF: Carolyn Webb of the Virginia Lakes Resort:

Eastern Sierra weather has been "fishermen friendly" even as fall approaches.

Fishing has been good and DF&G has been more than helpful with the amount of fish stocked this past week.

Tim Alpers also put in some really nice rainbows and my fish board shows the results.

A 4-pound, 2-ounce rainbow at Big Virginia Lake on yellow-glitter Power Bait dunked in corn juice.

Little Virginia saw a decrease in fishing pressure this week as school resumed for the year.

Nightcrawlers and yellow Sierra Gold have been doing well.

Also, yellow-glitter Power Bait and Thomas Buoyant lures, small gold prism Super Dupers, and the small Gold/Red Hot Shot.

Flies are still working well, mainly Doc's Twin Lakes Special in Olive, red throat olive Matukas, and olive and black Woolly Buggers.

WALKER RIVERS, CALIF: Rick Giser reported:

East Walker: Fishing is OK with mostly Nymphs and some Streamers. The fish are averaging over 18 inches..

West Walker: Fishing is excellent right now, especially with dry flies. There are a few big Alpers trout in there from the plant last week.

WILDHORSE RESERVOIR, NEV: Dennis Dunn at the Wild Horse Resort (775) 758-6472: "Business has been terrible because of the increasing gas prices.

When I get my gas pumps up and running again, I'm going to have to charge way over $4 a gallon.

We've got a few fishermen catching a few trout and a few perch.

Yesterday, a gal brought in a 4-pound (18-inch) Wiper Bass."
