Davis Lake, Calif. is 'on fire' for 4-6 pound rainbow trout

BISHOP, CALIF. AREA: Patti Apted of the Lake Sabrina Boat Landing (760-873-7425):

Sabrina Lake: Fishing this week was outstanding with most of the fish being pan-size.

The same things still seem to be working Ð fishing the inlets with eggs, worms or Power Bait, drifting around the rock piles with worms brought in lots of limits along with some bigger fish.

Some trollers were seen using flashers with a worm or red and gold Thomas Buoyant lure, while others were seen using Woolly Bugger either olive or black or olive Matuka flies.

The big fish of the week was a beautiful 6-pounder lured in by a Power Worm.

The Department of Fish and Game stocked the lake Monday with pan-size fish and a few fish tipping the scales at 2-pounds.

BLUE LAKES AREA, CALIF: Dave Kirby of the Woodfords Station (530-694-2930): "Wonderful weather in this part of the country, but not much fishing going on.

This is really an Indian Summer, right now.

BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR, CALIF: Rick Giser of Ken's Sporting Goods Store (760-932-7707) (at 11 a.m.): Has been pretty good, mostly for boats stillfishing with nightcrawlers or Power Bait.

Starting to do some trolling.

Most of the fish are 2-4 pounds.

BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR, CALIF: Jeffry Wenger of the Bridgeport Reservoir RV Park and Marina (888-377-1677): "Welcome to the last week of October from Bridgeport Reservoir RV Park and Marina.

As of Sunday, Oct. 23, the reservoir is still producing numbers of trout and they aren't getting any smaller.

Many limits and average sizes between 14 and 23 inches.

The East Walker channel just to the north of the marina is stacked full.

Fishing with bait, trolling with lures or worms and fly-fishing is staying consistent.

The lake has turned over which basically means the surface layer of the water has gotten cold enough to sink and mix with the colder, deeper layer.

In a few places the weeds and moss from this summer tend to move up and make the conditions just a bit thick.

The key is to move around and find that clear stuff.

The fish are on the move so give us a call to find the latest locations.

This past week, longer leaders (up to 3 feet) were the ticket, using Power Bait or Nightcrawlers.

Fly fishing is doing well. Use a medium-sink line with streamers around any of the weed beds or in the channels.

Special Alert! We are planning to close all operations here at the end of the month even though the season will still stay open till November 15th.

As of press time this will be the last weekend for us this year.

CAPLES LAKE, CALIF: The boat ramp will be closed on Oct. 27, re-open on the 28-30 and then close at 5 p.m. on the 30th for the last time this year.

CARSON RIVERS, CALIF:

East Carson River: No report.

West Carson River: Dave Kirby reported wonderful weather in this part of the country, but not much fishing going on.

This is really an Indian Summer, right now.

We had a few people over the weekend, but it was fairly quiet.

DAVIS LAKE, CALIF: Doug Ouellette at The Gilly Sporting Goods Store in Sparks (358-6113) reported, "Davis Lake is 'on fire' right now. It is the hottest fishing in the west. The fly fishermen are using Snails and Midges from float tubes and boats at Freeman Creek and Jenkins on the west side of the lake. They are catching lots of nice, solid 4-6 pounders."

FRENCHMAN RESERVOIR, CALIF: Wiggin's Trading Post at Chilcoot, Calif. (530-993-4683): Hooray for Fall!

Fishing is great. Colors are beautiful, no wind.

Many nice catches have been seen this past couple of weeks.

Use nightcrawlers or Power Bait.

INDIAN CREEK RESERVOIR, CALIF: Dave Kirby reported the fishermen are doing pretty fair from shore.

You need to put on a little weight ton get way out in the water.

No limits but some nice rainbows.

KIRMAN (AKA CARMEN) LAKE, CALIF: Rick Giser reported that the fishing has been good for fly fishermen for lots of nice cutthroat trout. Not very many brookies being caught.

Note: This lake is about a 2 mile hike from the Sonora Pass Highway (S. R. 108).

PYRAMID LAKE, NEV: Carla Molino of the Pyramid Lake Store (775-476-0555) reported: "The fishing has been pretty consistent, but it has not been a Super October as in the past.

The boats have had the most consistent luck, with some catching over 25 fish a day, up to 7-8 pounds.

The shore guys are fishing the deeper water.

The fly guys are taking the bigger fish.

Block House produced a 7-pounder the other day."

PYRAMID LAKE, NEV: Doug Ouellette reported, "Boats are doing real good. They are trolling with Lyman lures or Sierra spoons between Pelican Point and Warrior Point.

The fly fishermen are doing OK, with a shooting head from a boat.

The fishing at "The Nets" is not too good yet, it is a bit early.

Bring your fish in to be registered and photographed for a drawing at the end of the season for a fly fishing rod and reel combo worth more than $800."

RED LAKE, CALIF: Dave Kirby reported they are catching a few fish.

However, with a lot of algae on the surface, the fishermen are not doing very well.

SACRAMENTO RIVER, CALIF: Kirk Portocarrero of Outdoor Adventures Sport Fishing, Redding, Calif. (800-670-4448) reported:

Redding to Anderson: Water flows at 6,500 CFS.

Rainbow Trout:

Fly fishing is good. Catching and releasing many nice rainbows, 2-5 pounds.

Using No. 14 or No. 16 Pheasant tail flies. Micro May Fly patterns were working well.

Drifting Redding to Anderson, evenings.

King Salmon:

Is great in the Balls Ferry area.

Limits most days.

Catching huge Kings, up to 45 pounds.

Flatfish lures, wrapped with Sardine wrap, are best bet.

Watch for November and December to produce even bigger Kings.

SILVER LAKE, CALIF: Linda Thorbjornson at Kay's Silver Lake Resort (209-258-8598): "The fishing has been pretty good.

Our biggest fish last week was a 9-pound rainbow caught on a dark green colored Rapala lure, trolled behind a boat.

The lake is low.

LAKE TAHOE - North Shore:

Mickey Daniels of Mickey's Big Mack Charters (800-877-1462): "The fishing has been very good on every trip.

We've been catching our Mackinaw trout early in the morning and tagging and releasing the smaller ones.

We're catching lots of fish, but nothing super big.

The biggest this week was about 8 pounds. The fish are deep.

I am trolling the deep-water area in front of Carnelian Bay and King's Beach with silver Herring Dodger flasher blades with live minnows or large Apex lures.

LAKE TAHOE - North Shore:

Gene St. Denis of Blue Ribbon Charters and Tahoe Trophy Trout at South Lake Tahoe, Calif. (530-544-6552): "The Tahoe City Shelf, Agate Bay, Cal Neva Point and Dollar Point have all been very good, early in the mornings.

We're catching lots of fish.

We are trolling for Macks with silver Herring Dodger flasher blades and live minnows at depths of 100-250 feet, along the edges of the drop-offs."

LAKE TAHOE - South Shore: Gene St. Denis: "Fishing is good.

Best places have been Ski Run Mound and Camp Richardson.

We are trolling 150-250 feet deep with silver Herring Dodger flasher blades and live minnows."

LAKE TAHOE - East Shore:

Gene St. Denis: "Fishing has been good.

We are trolling silver Herring Dodger flasher blades and live minnows at a depth of 150-250 feet.

Working the Cave Rock Shelf for Macks."

TWIN LAKES, CALIF:

Upper Twin Lake: Annett's Mono Village (760-932-7071) (Ask for the boat house): Browns were active. Lots of 2-pounders being taken on Rapalas and Kastmasters.

A 3-pound, 3-ounce rainbow on yellow Sierra Gold.

As we are closing Oct. 31, all of the hand-fed trout from our ponds are being put into the lake. Their average weight is 3-7 pounds.

VIRGINIA LAKES, CALIF: Rick Giser reported that the fishing has been good at Big and Little Virginia Lakes.

Nothing big but a lot of fish.

WALKER RIVERS, CALIF: Rick Giser reported:

East Walker: Is OK. Water flow is 109 CFS.

Picking up fish with either Midges and Streamers.

West Walker: Fishing with flies, nightcrawlers, Salmon eggs and small spinners.

Still good on the north end of the Canyon near the Town of Walker.

WILDHORSE RESERVOIR, NEV: Dennis Dunn at the Wild Horse Resort (775) 758-6472: "Great weather and even better fishing.

The fishing has really turned on the last couple of days, now that the storm fronts have moved out of the area.

Catching lots of rainbows, cutbows, bowcutts and browns.

The rainbows are being compared to football in size and shape.

The fish are being caught both from shore and boats.

We had a couple of 5 pounders reported this last week."
