Douglas deputies warn of telephone scam

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office is investigating reports of a telephone solicitation scam by someone claiming to be collecting donations on behalf of the department.

"The Douglas County Sheriff's Office does not conduct telephone solicitations," said Sgt. Tom Mezzetta.

"Such calls purporting to be from an employee or agent of the DCSO should be treated in a manner befitting what they are - a ruse to separate you from your money."

Mezzetta recommended residents hang up on the callers.

"A polite 'no thank you' and hanging up without giving the caller the opportunity to continue their spiel is neither unreasonable nor rude," Mezzetta said.

He asked that if a telephone number or address of the solicitor is obtained, the information be forwarded to the sheriff's office.

Information, 782-9931.
