Vegas prosecutor to run for attorney general

Catherine Cortez Masto of Las Vegas announced Tuesday she will run for attorney general.

"My experience as a prosecutor and in management at the top levels of government has led me to this point," she said.

She said the Attorney General's Office should concentrate more on fighting the crimes of identity theft and fraud - both of which target seniors in higher proportions than others. And she said she'll try to better assist law enforcement around the state in the fight against drugs - especially methamphetamine use.

She has been rumored planning to run for several months and has reportedly raised a significant amount in contributions.

She described herself as a lifelong Nevadan and listed among her credentials a brief stint as chief of staff to Gov. Bob Miller. She was also an assistant county manager in Southern Nevada. In addition, she has served as an assistant U.S. attorney in the District of Columbia.

George Chanos, who was recently appointed attorney general replacing Brian Sandoval who left to become a U.S. District judge, is also planning to run for the seat in 2006.

They are the only two announced candidates so far.
