The film to see before your next visit to Virginia City

State Historic Preservation Officer Ron James hosts a video tour behind Virginia City's T-Shirt Curtain during a half-hour episode from the Department of Cultural Affairs' "Exploring Nevada" documentary series.

Virginia City is visited by people from all over the world. Most enjoy the Old West feel of Main Street, refreshment at a saloon, antique stores and souvenir shops without ever knowing that in the midst of the souvenir and hot dog vendors, historic sights are right out in the open if you just know where to look.

The program will be shown during a free public Video Brown Bag Lunch at noon on Wednesday at the Nevada State Museum, 600 N. Carson St. Call 687-4810, ext. 237.

Neighborhoods meet to prepare for fire season

The Nevada Fire Safe Council helps local chapters to organize their efforts and obtain and manage necessary resources. The council, initially supported by Cooperative Extension six years ago, is now an independent nonprofit organization that aims to reduce the loss of lives, property and valuable natural resources to wildfire.

The areas of Kings Canyon and Timberline are meeting, in hopes of forming local chapters of the Nevada Fire Safe Council.

Kings Canyon residents will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Carson City Library, 900 N. Roop St.

Timberline residents will meet at 7 p.m. June 7, at the Carson City office of University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, 2621 Northgate Lane, Suite 12.

The Lakeview area has already formed a chapter and will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Carson City Fire Department Station No. 1, 777 S. Stewart St. The meetings are open to the public.

Nominees sought for Farm Service Agency posts

The U.S. Department of Agriculture will accept nominations for eligible candidates to serve on local Farm Service Agency county committees, beginning June 15.

Almost anyone participating or cooperating in a local FSA program and of legal voting age may be a candidate.

Individuals may nominate themselves or others. All nomination forms must be received in the county FSA office or postmarked by Aug. 1.

Voting takes place between Nov. 4 and Dec. 5.

To hold office as an FSA County Committee member, a person must meet these basic eligibility requirements:

• Participate or cooperate in a program administered by Farm Service Agency.

• Be eligible to vote in a county committee election.

• Reside in the LAA in which the person is a candidate. (In some cases, this requirement may be waived. Check with your local county office.)

People uncertain about their eligibility to vote in the FSA County Committee election should contact their local FSA office. Affirmation of eligibility to vote must be determined in order for a vote to count in an election.

Information on the elections, including the nomination form, is also available at your local FSA County offices or USDA Service Centers or online at: www.fsa.usda.gov/pas/publications/elections
