Lyon County's new fire station paid for by developers

Work began on Monday on a new fire station in the Mark Twain area of Dayton. The single-story, three-bay fire house will replace the old station on LaFond Avenue.

The new Mark Twain Station No. 38 is on Six Mile Canyon Road near its intersection with Highway 50. Construction is expected to wrap up in seven months.

The station is being donated and built by Reynen & Bardis Development and Mallard Development companies, which raised money for the project.

"This is a gift," said Fire Chief John Gillenwater, adding that the much-needed station won't cost taxpayers a dime.

The new station will have a fire engine, ambulance and heavy rescue equipment. Unlike the old station, it will be capable of housing firefighters. Fire prevention offices will also be located under the roof of the new station.

"This is a major improvement over the previous station," Gillenwater said. "The new station is strategically located along Highway 50.

"The old one was tucked away on La Fond in a subdivision, built toward the back of the community. It may have made sense at the time. But now we will be better able to serve the community up and down that Highway 50 corridor."

The new station will serve the central region of Lyon County, the fastest growing county in the state and the seventh fastest in the nation.
