American Legion to host a reception before meeting

The American Legion High Desert Post 56 and Auxiliary Unit 56 will meet Thursday at the Veterans Hall, Second and Curry streets.

The meeting will be preceded by a reception for outgoing post commander Joseph Canyon and auxiliary president Blake Amsterdam-Canyon at 6 p.m.

All veterans and their guests are invited.

Volunteers needed for Girl Scouts

Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada is looking for new volunteers to provide services to girls that live in Northern Nevada and eastern California. You do not have to be a parent of a girl to be a volunteer. Adults are needed to lead and organize troops, provide skills and activities, and train others, said Melanie Kimbel, GSSN Adult Development Manager.

The C Hill Flag dedication will be at 11 a.m. Saturday. Drive with family and friends to the saddle south of C Hill.

Cultures reign at annual festival

The whole family can enjoy a world of dancing, food and exhibits at Western Nevada Community College's 10th Multicultural Festival from 11:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, at the Carson City campus, 2201 West College Parkway. Admission is free.

Multicultural entertainment includes dancing from around the world, including country western line dancing, belly dancing, traditional Aztec dancing and more. The Reno Taiko Drummers will perform their traditional Japanese drumming and the Sierra Highlanders playing bagpipes.

Twenty exhibitors offer gift items from around the world, arts and crafts, and cultural information.

Kids fishing derby returns to Davis Creek Park

Carson City Elks Lodge 2177 will hold Tommy's Annual Fishing Derby for kids ages 2 to 12 Saturday at Davis Creek Regional Park.

Registration is from 8:30-9 a.m., and fishing from 9-11 a.m. Each child gets a prize.

Hot dogs and hamburgers are free to contestants and their families.

Learn about wild-horse legislation at women's luncheon

The Carson City Democratic Women's Club meets at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Grandma Hattie's. Guest speaker Eileen Cohen will talk about wild-horse legislation.

Free seminars teach container planting

Learn how to pot containers like a professional. Greenhouse Garden Center will present a free one-hour seminar, "Container Planting by Janet" from 11 a.m.-noon on Saturday.

Discussion will cover plant selection and combinations for containers, plus soil and fertilizer requirements.

At 1 p.m. is the "Do-It-Yourself Container Planting" workshop. Buy a plant container or bring your own, purchase plants during the break between seminars with the advice of the professionals, and create your own container planting on the spot.

Soil and fertilizer will be provided at no charge.

Space is limited, so preregistration is necessary.

Unionville

Watercolor workshop set for weekend

Lady Jill Mueller will lead a watercolor workshop Friday through Sunday in Unionville. This old-Nevada town is approximately three hours from Reno.

Two days of instruction will take place around Unionville's old buildings, windows, barns and years of weathered wood. Cost is $415 per student.
