Christened a labor of love in the historic district, the 1879 Bliss Mansion received about $48,000 in redevelopment funds from the Carson City Supervisors.
Joe McCarthy, the city's economic development and redevelopment manager, said Friday the city is covering about 20 percent of the cost of the bed-and-breakfast's renovation. That percentage doesn't include the $422,000 owner Joyce Harrington and Ron Smith spent to purchase the 710 W. Robinson St. mansion. They were out of the country and could not be reached for comment.
"This kind of addition to our downtown is another example of the commitment of property owners to revitalize the area," McCarthy said.
The renovation and restoration on the mansion has cost more than $250,000, McCarthy said.
"It's a labor of love by Joyce Harrington to purchase and do a complete remodel of the historic Chartz House."
Some debate came up in the Board of Supervisors' meeting about if the Bliss Mansion needed the redevelopment funding.
McCarthy said the money went to façade improvements that otherwise might not have gone into the project without the city's help.
Built in 1913, the Chartz House is a traditional Mission-style home filled with antiques and hardwood floors, and includes an angel mural on one room's ceiling.
