Although Calvary Chapel officials have done well transforming the inside of a prefabricated metal building in northeast Carson City into a place of worship, they're now looking to move out and into a church proper.
"We want to have a place of our own," said Briana Simmons, an administrative assistant with the nondenominational church.
Starting with a 19,036-square-foot church with 3,100-square-foot for use as a sanctuary, Calvary Chapel is planning on the eventual construction of an entire complex with classrooms, a private school and a ball field on more than nine acres in southeast Carson City.
The project would be built in five different phases, as funding for each is raised.
"It's an ambitious project," said Carson City Community Development Director Walter Sullivan.
The first phase would be the church itself. The following two phases would add about 17,000 square feet of classroom space for Sunday School, Bible study and other programs. Phase 4 is a 32,000-square-foot kindergarten through eighth-grade private school. The final phase is to be a playfield, a pavilion and storage building.
Construction on the church could begin as soon as this summer, and last about 18 months, Simmons said.
Once it's finished it will seat more than 330 people, and triple the size of the chapel and sanctuary on Forrest Way.
"It would be nice to throw out an anchor," Simmons said.
The project is slated for 9.25 acres on Clearview Drive, near Line Drive in southeast Carson City. The land to the south of the proposed site is considered public, the property to the west is residential and the property to the east has been bought by the Nevada Department of Transportation for construction of the Carson City Freeway.
Sullivan said church officials have agreed to follow city recommendations on water conservation, using water-free landscaping and low-water appliances throughout the project.
The Carson City Planning Commission is scheduled to vote on a special-use permit for the church at its regular meeting today.
