Award winning pianist to perform in Carson

Pianist Robyn Wells will perform a free concert of classical music at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church, 1750 Mountain St. Donations will be accepted.

The concert is titled "A Programmatic Tour of America," featuring music by a variety of American composers including, Gershwin, MacDowell, Beach, Carpenter, Whithorne, and several classical pieces by Billy Joel.

Wells is adjunct piano faculty at Albertson College of Idaho in Caldwell, Idaho. She has won prizes in several piano competitions, including being selected as a finalist in the 1998 Award-Debut Competition.

Senior travel group meeting on Tuesday

The Silver Sierra Adventurers travel group will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Carson Nugget, 507 N. Carson St.

Guest speaker is Jackie Williams, director of San Diego Travel Industry.

History brought to life in evening programs

The public is invited to Mormon Station Park in Genoa at 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday to meet Clara Barton, Sarah Winnemucca, Annie Oakley, Nathaniel Bowditch and other historical characters.

This event will appeal to adults, children and everyone interested in learning about history. Pack a picnic supper, enjoy the park and see re-enactments of historical people by young chautauquans.

This educational program of the Douglas County Historical Society started in January and ends with this performance. The youngsters enjoy performing and learning about their characters.

The program is funded in part by Nevada Humanities and the Carson Valley Kiwanis Club.

Stroke screening in Minden on Tuesday

Residents living in and around the Minden community can be screened to reduce their risk of having a stroke. Life Line Screening will be at the First Baptist Church, 1696 Highway 395 N., on Tuesday, beginning at 9 a.m.

Screenings are fast, painless and low cost.

They involve the use of ultrasound technology, and scan for potential health problems related to: blocked arteries which can lead to a stroke, aortic aneurysms which can lead to a ruptured aorta, and hardening of leg arteries, a strong predictor of heart disease. Also offered is a bone-density screening to assess the risk for osteoporosis.

Each screening requires 10 minutes or less to complete.

A complete vascular screening package, including the stroke/carotid artery, abdominal aortic aneurysm and ankle brachial index (hardening of the arteries) screenings is $109. Signups for a complete vascular package include the osteoporosis screening for $129.
