Flag-Retirement Ceremony today behind Capitol

The American Legion sponsored Nevada Boys' State will conduct a Flag-Retirement Ceremony at 12:45 p.m. today behind the Capitol at the Nevada Veterans Memorial. More than 100 high school juniors from around the state will participate in this annual event.

This year, the Boys State session is dedicated to the Nevada National Guard.

Garden Center hosts discussion on ponds

Greenhouse Garden Center presents Mike McPherson, speaker and representative of Innovative Pond Products at 10 a.m. Saturday. McPherson calls his presentation "Ponds 101," a tutorial in layman's terms on the basics of getting started in this hobby.

Event raises hep C awareness

Hepatitis C Awareness, a nonprofit organization, hosts a "Hep C Aware - Carson City" concert noon-9 p.m. Saturday at the Pony Express Pavilion. The concert will feature performances by Rick Monroe, Che Zuro, Kung Fu Sophie, Slim Chance, Gene Butler, 7th Fall and Kelly's Lot. There will be dancing by the Desert Goddesses and special guests speakers. Admission is free.

After losing a close friend to hepatitis C in 2001, Kelly Zirbes and her band Kelly's Lot began offering hep C information at their shows. With the desire to reach a mass level of awareness of this disease, Kelly put out a few calls to fellow musicians across the country to help raise the awareness of Hepatitis C on a national level. The response led to the founding of HepCAware.org.

A postcard was designed for the campaign. Vicki Dalton from Carson City heard about the postcards and contacted Zirbes about helping distribute them in Carson City.

The "Hep C Aware Street Team" was formed and has now grown into a national coalition of street teams working together with the musicians to raise awareness of the deadly disease.

Dalton, who lives with hepatitis C, decided she wanted to put together an event in Carson City to raise awareness on a larger scale. She called upon her employer, Carson-Tahoe Hospital, to sponsor the event . HepCAware.org helped book the bands and an event was organized.

Sheriff's open house set for Saturday

The second Sheriff's Open House will be from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at the Sheriff's Office, 9801 E. Musser St.

There will be free food, games and entertainment.

Dads ride free at Father's Day weekend steam up

Treat Dad to a ride aboard historic Virginia & Truckee Railroad equipment during the Nevada State Railroad Museum's annual Father's Day Steam-Up on Saturday and Sunday. Trains run every 40 minutes from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

The railroad museum is at 2810 S. Carson St. call 687-6953.
