Lighting sparks big blaze about 70 miles northwest of Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (AP) - A fire burning out of control has scorched about 20,000 acres of land on the Nevada Test Site and Nellis Air Force range, authorities said Tuesday.

Lighting sparked the blaze Friday near Dome Mountain, about 70 miles northwest of Las Vegas.

More than 450 people were involved in fighting the fire on the ground and from the air. No injuries or damage to structures have been reported.

"They are aggressively fighting the fire from the air with nine air tankers and seven helicopters," said Beth Short, a spokeswoman with the Bureau of Land Management.

Authorities said they didn't know how long it would take to control the fire, which was burning in remote, rocky terrain. Operations at the test site and on the Air Force range weren't affected, officials said.
