Citizenship class begins Saturday at library

Carson City Library will offer Citizenship Classes (in English) from 10 a.m.-noon Saturday through Oct. 1 in the Library's auditorium.

Registrants must be able to speak, read and write English.

The Saturday classes will run for approximately 10 weeks.

Registration is required prior to the start date. A $20 donation to the Library Gift Fund is suggested.

Donations will be used in the development of the Spanish and ESL (English as a Second Language) collection.

Library staff member Javier Ramirez, himself a naturalized citizen, will facilitate the classes.

His focus of the classes will include an overview of United States history and information on the citizenship examination, including the N-400 Application for Naturalization.

Youth training program seeks recruits

Leaders of the Devil Pups Youth Development Program are looking for a few good young people for this year's encampment at Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton, Calif.

Youth between the ages of 14 and 17 and who are willing to accept the challenge of 10 days of real Marine Corps training, call Major George Class, USMC (Ret), (775) 721-5643, 782-9521 or 423-1933. Camp begins Aug. 3 and graduation is Aug. 13.

Tickets on sale for quilt raffle to benefit museum

The Ol' Broadcloths, a mini-group of the Carson valley Quilters Guild, have donated a Victorian style double size quilt to help raise funds for the building of the "Carriage House" at the Roberts House Museum.

The quilt is a nine-patch pattern with peach, green and cream tones intertwined with rose pattern squares quilted by Lauretta Thomas of Gardnerville.

The mini-group has previously crafted and donated quilts to Meals on Wheels, Spirit Horse Riding Therapy for Disabled Children, Sertoma, Waterfall fire victims and they participated in the Millennium Quilt for the Carson Valley Historical Society.

Tickets will be on sale from 1-3 p.m. Fridays through Sundays at the Roberts House Museum.

Tickets are $1 each or six for $5.

The winning ticket will be drawn Dec. at the Carson City Historical Society's Victorian Christmas Tour in Carson City.

The winner need not be present to win.

The Ol' Broadcloths mini-group consists of Wanda Canton, Bobbie Cropper, Karin Dicks, Mary Lou Gruber, Sandy Haywood, Carol Kellogg, Barbara Kowalski, Lyne Mallett, Martha Perkins and Margie Runyon.

Library team assembling for Relay for Life

Friends of the Dayton Valley Library is hoping to field a full team at the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life from 6 p.m. to 9 a.m. Aug. 12.

The Friends will also be hold a book sale from 4 -8:30 p.m., so drop by to get a good book for the evening.

Luminaries (bags which will be lit with candles at 9 p.m.) are available at the library. Decorate your own luminary or have the story-time children decorate them for you. Join us to remember the victims, rejoice with the survivors and help find a cure.
