Mission: better newspaper and community

The mission statement you see in the upper left corner of this page, part of our new package introduced today, comes from the mission statement of our parent company, Swift Newspapers.

We're making it a permanent fixture as part of the Appeal's new design to remind you - and us - there are loftier goals toward which we are striving every day, even if it sometimes seems just getting a newspaper published 365 days a year is enough.

"With commitment to integrity ... " - Ultimately, all a newspaper has is its credibility. We attempt to be honest, fair, balanced and open in our news coverage, as well as our business dealings, as the only means we know of gaining and keeping your trust.

"... we bring light to truth ... " - In addition to the attributes listed above, we believe it is not enough to simply cover the news in our hometown. It is the responsibility of a newspaper to illuminate the issues, events and concerns of its readers and help them gain an understanding of the world around them. That light sometimes shines into dark corners, and it is frequently a spotlight on the good in our communities.

" ... excellence to endeavor ... " - Any business can be good enough, or it can aspire to excellence. Today's new look for the Appeal is a significant example of our attempts to grow and improve at a steady pace.

" ... and strength to community." - Like few other enterprises, a newspaper gets wrapped into the character of a city and a region. The Nevada Appeal, which will be celebrating its 140th anniversary this year, has the oldest such legacy in the state.

The Appeal strives not only to reflect the community, but to build on its strengths and shore up its weaknesses. And as residents, our employees heed the responsibility to involve themselves personally.

That's our mission. Now it's time to get back to work.
