Supervisors: Stop then turn on red

The Carson City Board of Supervisors amended a municipal code Thursday that allowed drivers in city limits to cruise through red lights during a right turn and cut through property to avoid stopping.

Until Thursday, the city code said drivers did not have to stop at red lights when turning right on an intersecting road.

The code conflicted with state law that requires drivers to stop prior to making a right turn. In 1981, the state law was amended to say that drivers could not use public or private property to avoid stopping at red lights.

The municipal code was finally amended to conform to state law Thursday.

In other meeting business, the members of the Historic Resources Commission presented three city properties with the 2004 Historic Preservation Award.

The annual preservation awards program honors individuals, organizations or projects that have made important contributions toward preserving Carson City's heritage.

The commission's selections are the National Bestsellers building at 123 W. Second St., the Glenbrook Co. building at 504 W. Fifth St. and the Pecorilla residence at 1004 W. King St.
