Augustine considering run for treasurer

Nevada Controller Kathy Augustine said Friday she is considering a run for state treasurer next year.

Earlier, Augustine said she was looking at the lieutenant governor's post and confirmed Friday that's still an option.

"I'm leaning toward treasurer," she said. "But I may run for lieutenant governor or not at all."

Augustine is serving her second term as controller and will be barred from seeking a third by term limits.

She is the only constitutional officer in Nevada history to have been impeached by the Assembly. The Senate in December 2004 upheld one of the three charges against her but couldn't muster the two-thirds majority to convict on the other two charges. She was convicted of violating state ethics laws by using her office in her re-election campaign.

The other charges involved having her executive secretary spend most of her time working on the re-election campaign and using state-owned office computer equipment in that campaign.

She was fined, but the Senate declined to remove her from the office - the most severe option.

Before becoming controller, Augustine was a member of the Nevada Senate and prior to that, she served as a member of the Assembly.
