Volunteers needed for holiday food drive

Advocates to End Domestic Violence needs volunteers to help with the annual Share Your Holiday Food Drive Dec. 16.

The food drive is held from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and this year is at Albertsons/Sav-On on North Carson Street, at the corner of West College Parkway.

Volunteers are needed for the early and mid-afternoon shifts. Anyone may volunteer one or more hours.

Donations needed by blood services for the holidays

The Holidays are the hardest times of the year for the community blood supply. Donations decline because of weather, colds and flu, and people shopping and celebrating. Unfortunately, the need for blood is still there for patients with cancer, operations, accidents and other trauma. For this reason, we are imploring you to consider blood donation.

Join us for our Annual Cub Country Christmas at 11 a.m. Wednesday. We will be serving lunch courtesy of the Horseshoe Club and are pleased to offer drawings for a 50-inch widescreen TV; stay at Harrah's Tahoe; dinner for four at Casino Fandango, and a spa-day for two at David Walley's Hot Springs Resort.

Winter is swim season at Aquatic Facility

Carson City Aquatic Facility is open year-round for recreation and exercise. The facility is open seven days a week and offers open swim, lap swim, exercise classes, weight room and swim lessons.

Those looking for alternative forms of exercise or entertainment during the winter months can stop by for program information or call 887-2242.

'The Judgment' play takes stage at Seeliger

The play "The Judgment" will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Friday, and 1 p.m. Saturday at Seeliger Elementary School in the multi-purpose room, 2800 Saliman Road.

The play is free and open to the public. It is a Solid Rock production.

Retired teachers meet to celebrate Christmas

The Carson City Retired Teachers Association will meet at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Q's restaurant for its annual Christmas luncheon.

The Silver Strings group will provide music for the occasion.

The teachers association meets four times a year for lunch and a program. The main function of the organization is to provide scholarships for students from Carson and Douglas high schools as well as WNCC who are interested in becoming educators.

Comstock History Center opening Friday

Nevada's Department of Cultural Affairs will host a public open house from 1-3 p.m. Friday at the Comstock History Center. The center is at 20 N. E St. in Virginia City.

The facility houses the recently relocated Virginia & Truckee Engine No. 18, the Dayton. It is also home to the Comstock Historic District Commission and its non-circulating reference library. The building includes meeting space, room for archaeological analysis and curation of Comstock resources, and it will eventually provide space for various traveling exhibits.

The center has a tentative plan to be open to the public from 10:30 a.m.- 3 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays, holidays excepted. In April, the museum will open "Between Fences" a Smithsonian traveling exhibit that examines the roles of fences in the unfolding of American history. In late May, the facility will host "Havens in a Heartless World: Virginia City's Saloons and the Archaeology of the Wild West." The exhibit is being prepared by the Nevada State Museum with a grant from the Institute for Museum and Library Services.
