Commitment to healthier living gets team treatment through the Great American Weight Loss Challenge

Obesity is a national epidemic, and our community is making a change by moving more often and eating healthier foods, says Maryellen Waltz, executive director for HealthSmart, a local nonprofit community-based organization.

Nevada Fitness Center Vice President Chris Welton says the Weight Loss Challenge can counteract that.

"We sincerely hope everyone in this community jumps on the bandwagon because you instantly reap the benefits of a healthier life style," Welton said.

Early enrollment begins Wednesday. and forms and additional information may be obtained from the office of HealthSmart, 1711 N Roop St.

The program:

n Ten persons per team, secure a sponsor. Each member contributes $5, plus $100 from the sponsor for a total of $150 per team. If you don't have a team, don't worry; one will be formed for you at $15 per individual.

n Registration and the starting weights are taken at the Kick-Off on Sept. 17 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center Gym, 851 E. William St. (The starting weight can be registered Sept. 21 at any Nevada Fitness Center.)

n Weigh-in on Wednesdays that can take place at any of the five Nevada Fitness Centers, where free membership is part of the Great American Weight Loss Challenge III.

n The program is 10 weeks, with a Victory Celebration on 4:30-6 p.m. Nov. 18 at Nevada Fitness Center at 829 Fairview Drive. Prizes and surprises will be awarded, and each participant will be recognized.
