Edwin R. Burgess

A memorial service for Edwin R. Burgess, 84, a Carson City resident for the past four years, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church in Carson City with military honors.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday at Walton's Chapel of the Valley.

Mr. Burgess died Aug. 8, 2005, at home. He was born July 2, 1921, in Lawrence, Kan., to Edwin T. and Helen Rohrer Burgess.

He married Elsie May on Aug. 21, 1948, in Lawrence.

Before moving to Carson City, he lived in Reno for 12 years.

He attended high school and one year of business college.

Mr. Burgess worked for the U.S. Postal Service for more than 37 years.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in China, Burma and India.

He was a national member of the India Group, a member of Golden West Baska of Southern California and commander and past commander of the 250th Port Battalion Group that served in India.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Carson City.

He was a member of the Boy Scouts for 75 years (serving 30-plus years as a scoutmaster) and he was an Eagle Scout.

He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, White Shrine, Sierra Sage 3 of Carson City and a 50-year member of Acacia Lodge 9 F&AM of Lawrence.

Among his survivors are his wife of 56 years; children Edwin Eugene and Elmer Lee, both of Yosemite, Calif.; grandsons Miles and Kyle of Minden and Erik and Elliott of El Portal, Calif.; brothers Arden and William, both of Lawrence; and numerous extended-family members.

Cremation will be at Walton's Sierra Crematory.
