Niels Hanbury Anderson

A memorial service for Niels Hanbury Anderson, 86, will be at 2 p.m. Aug. 13 at the Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship, 780 Del Monte Lane, Reno.

Mr. Anderson died July 7, 2005, after a long illness. He was born Jan. 18, 1919, in Los Angeles, to Olaf Hanbury and Cordelia Agnes Anderson.

He graduated from Santa Clara High School in Santa Clara, Calif., and from the University of California, Berkeley, in the Naval ROTC program in 1941. He attended Stanford University School of Business from 1947 to 1949, and received a master's degree in business.

He became an ensign in the U.S. Naval Supply Corps and served four years in World War II in the Pacific on several ships, and on many duty stations for 23 years and retired in 1965 as a captain.

Mr. Anderson worked for four years at the Crocker Citizens National Bank in San Francisco and then joined the University of Nevada system as director of the computer center in Reno. He served for 13 years and retired in 1982.

He spent several years doing consulting work with the National Judicial College, the Nevada Supreme Court and the city of Reno before retiring for the third time.

He was preceded in death by sister Ruth Frances and brother James Robert.

Among his survivors are his wife of 55 years, Barbara Justine of Reno; sons and daughters-in-law Peter Hanbury and Sheila of Carson City, Robert Stephen and Anita of South Lake Tahoe and David Scott and Angela of Reno; brother and sister-in-law, Richard Alden and Helen of Burlington, Wash.; grandchildren Daniel, Justine, Krista, Cassady, Trey and Marley; and many nieces and nephews.
