The Carson High boys and girls track teams had a banner day at the BYU High School Invitional in Provo, Utah, posting many personal best and Northern Nevada top times.
Matt Moore, Josh Heilman, Kayla Sanchez and Alex McAlman were among the leaders for the Senators as CHS brought 14 athletes to the meet, which featured more than 50 schools.
Carson's boys took fourth with 42 points while the Senator girls were sixth with 37 points. But Carson coach Todd Ackerman said his team could have performed even better.
"If some of them would have come and prepared to compete, we would have done a little better," Ackerman said. "Some of them came just to have fun.
"We did pretty well. We're disappointed in some other places. Overall we did a real good job."
Sanchez shattered her own school record in the 300 hurdles, taking second in 43.70 seconds, which is also Northern Nevada's top time. Andrea Keirstead took 31st in the event with a personal best of 50.01 and Lindsay Ford was 48th in 51.48.
Sanchez also set a personal best of of 25.08 in the 200, taking third out of 79 runners. That's also the best time in Northern Nevada. In addition, Sanchez was third out of 104 runners in the 100 in 12.54. Crista Dixon was 32nd in a personal best 13.47.
Josh Heilman took second in the 100 in a personal best and Northern Nevada best of 22.11 and second out of 118 runners in the 100 in a personal best 11.08.
McAlman had two outstanding performances, throwing a personal best 37 feet, two inches to take third in the shot put and posting Northern Nevada's top throw of 125-4, a personal best, to place second in the discus.
Matt Moore posted Northern Nevada's top time and a personal best in taking second in the 300 hurdles in 39.03. Seth Carter was 22nd in 41.71 and was also 22nd in the 200 in 23.25. Moore was also fourth in the 110 high hurdles in 15.42.
Stephen Waicul took second in the discus at 156-1. Amanda Benson ran a personal best of 1:00.58 in taking 18th in the 400.
Carson's 4x400 boys relay team of Carter, Jeremy Gray, Tilor Smith and Moore were fourth in a season best and Northern Nevada best of 3:28.62. Carson was able to set the mark despite Moore falling about nine meters from the finish.
The Senator girls relay team of Ford, Sandra McAlman, Benson and Sanchez also took fourth in an outstanding time of 4:02.41. The girls 4x100 team of Dixon, McAlman, Ford and Benson ran a season best 51.85.
Other marks for Carson included: Waicul, shot put, 16th, 44-9 1/2; 200 - Bryan Maffei, 46th, 23.61; 200 - Benson, 30th, 27.04; 100 - Maffei, 11.92; Smith, 11.65; 400 - Gray, 27th, 52.27; 100 hurdles - Keirstead, 15th, 16.84; Boys 400 relay (Heilman, Gray, Maffei, Smith) - 16th, 44.43; Long jump - Smith, 19-10; Sandra McAlman, 15-1, personal best.
PROM INVITE
Eric Walther threw a personal best 49-6 1/2 to take second for Carson in Saturday's meet at Manogue.
