Heather Matthews of Fernley won a pitchers duel against Dayton High's Nicole Greer as the Vaqueros beat the Dust Devils 2-1 on Wednesday in Fernley.
Greer threw a four-hitter, struck out six and walked none while Matthews also pitched a four-hitter and struck out seven. Fernley took a 1-0 lead in the first before Dayton tied the score in the fourth when Sara Simmons scored on Bailey Garcia's triple. Fernley won the game in the bottom of the seventh. Garcia went 2-for-3 and Greer and Simmons had the other hits for Dayton (5-11, 4-8).
