Plan now for summer fun in the sun for kids

Summer is right around the corner, and many parents or grandparents are looking for fun adventure to keep children entertained.

For the younger age groups, you can't fail with all the fun activities at the Children's Museum Of Northern Nevada. A year's pass for a family of six is only $50.

You also get 10 percent off in the gift shop and at birthday parties at the museum. You can also purchase a reciprocal pass that gets you into 12,000 other museums across the United States.

Carson City Recreation Division offers preschool and latchkey programs, summer camp, sports, acrobatics, karate and gymnastics.

The one that piqued my interest last year is the newly designed "Road Trip," which targets middle school-age students. They can choose which trips they want, from rock climbing to Wild Waters and Boomtown.

The Aquatic Center is next door to the community center. It has a swim-pass card for only $17.

You can also purchase passes for children in need and drop them off at any school site. Counselors will make sure they go to a deserving child.

Brewery Arts Center offers classes all year long for the artist in the family. So check it out if your child is interest in pottery, stained glass, watercolor, creative drawing and sculpting - just to name a few.

Western Nevada Community College offers assorted classes through its "College for Kids." Offerings include computer classes, CPR certification, Baby- sitting 101, arts and crafts and more.

At Carson Middle School's annual Basketball Camp, Coach Whisler really gets into the fundamentals of the sport. My sons enjoyed attending this camp then went on to play for Carson High School.

University of Nevada Reno Cooperative Extension group's 4-H Camp is a blast. At Lake Tahoe, the children hike, swim, and learn a lifetime of stories and fun songs.

Be sure to check out the Web sites for each group, because they're constantly updated.
