Teens celebrate Library Week with armchair adventures

This week is National Library Week, and Cory King at the Carson Library has a week filled with adventure.

With the help of adventure photographer, extreme athlete and Nevada Appeal photographer Rick Gunn, teenagers will enjoy Tuesday's viewing of "Extreme Encounters." This includes some great photos of rock climbing, cycling, sand surfing and much more. Gunn is planning to bike around the world, starting this summer.

Thursday's movie, "Everest," contains footage from the disastrous expedition in 1996.

Friday is "Design with Duct Tape."

Dialogue to End Childhood Hunger & Homelessness in Carson City will meet this month to discuss recent events concerning the closing of the Downtowner Motel and the displacement of children living there with their families. Anyone who would like to help may participate.

Kathy Wolfe from Carson City Environmental Health Department will present the numbers gathered during January's Point in Time homeless count.

Did you know that premature birth is the leading cause of newborns'' death in the first month of life? It affects 1,305 babies a day in the United States. One in every eight babies will be born prematurely.

Some of them won't survive, and others will have health problems that could last a lifetime. And premature births are on the rise - up to 27 percent since 1981.

Dan Nevin is asking for support in the March of Dimes Walk America. For the third consecutive year, Dan will participate in the March of Dimes Northern Nevada Walk America on April 30.

Dan is asking that you please consider pledging $1 per mile, or whatever is appropriate.

Soroptimist International's benefit Comedy Night Saturday features two great comedians: Grace White, aka "Old Hippie Chick," and Alberto Vallejo.

Enjoy complimentary champagne and chocolates while helping women and children charities throughout Carson City.

For the Carson City Republican Women, this is an exciting month with the three finalists for scholarships at Carson and Dayton high schools. The three finalists from each school will give a short presentation April 19. In May, the Republican Women will award a $1,000 scholarship to one student each from Carson and Dayton.

Additionally, Chris Bayer from Court Appointed Special Advocates will give a short presentation about that program. The luncheon is open to members and nonmembers.
