Douglas baseball defeats South Tahoe

What started out as a pitchers' duel quickly turned into a blowout Thursday afternoon at Douglas High School.

South Tahoe's Zack Cross and Douglas' Tyson Estes each took no-hitters into the third inning, but the Tigers got their bats going in a big way, eventually pulling away with a 16-5 win against the Vikings in Minden.

Estes pitched three scoreless innings, striking out five and walking three to pick up the win, while Cross kept the powerful Tiger bats at bay through two innings before Douglas posted four runs in the third.

Roman Davis and Estes each finished with four RBI for the Tigers while Chad Walling, Jimmy Pierce, Spike Agosta and Davis each collected two hits in the win.

Walling stole four bases, Pierce and Agosta each stole two and Ben Brower stole one to lead a dominating performance on the basepaths for the Tigers.

For South Tahoe, Nick Hanes hit a grand slam home run in the fourth as the Vikings did all of their scoring off D.J. Brady in the inning.

Jaime Moore went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Vikings.

Douglas broke the game open with a nine-run fourth inning.

Brady opened the inning with a double to left and Walling bunted safely to set up a Pierce single, which scored Brady.

Davis doubled to left to score Walling and Phil Mannelly singled to bring both Davis and Pierce home. Agosta then reached on an error and Nate Whalin followed by drawing a walk.

Mannelly scored on a wild pitch and Estes singled to drive in Agosta and Whalin.

Brower and Brady were then each hit by pitches, Hadlock sacrificed Estes home and then Pierce was hit with yet another pitch.

Davis then hit a sacrifice fly to score Brower before Mannelly grounded into a fielder's choice to end the inning.

South Tahoe refused to go away however, as catcher Buck Pershing drew a walk from Brady to open the bottom of the fourth.

Moore then had an infield single and Curtis Maxwell singled to bring Pershing home.

Kyle Jones was hit by a pitch, bringing Hanes to the plate. Hanes took two balls and then fouled off two pitches before taking a deep shot over the left-field fence for the grand slam.

Douglas improved to 10-5 overall and 4-0 in league play on the year. The two teams meet again Saturday at Douglas for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
