Carson girls fourth at Nevada Union Invitational

Christy Works and Annie Brinson cracked the top 20 individually to lead Carson High School to a solid fourth-place finish in the large schools varsity girls race at the 42nd annual Nevada Union Invitational cross country invitational on Saturday in Grass Valley, Calif.


Works and Brinson clocked identical times of 20 minutes, 35 seconds over the three-mile course to finish 19th and 20th respectively in a race that featured 15 teams from the Sacramento and Northern Nevada area.


Defending Nevada 4A state champion Reno ran away with the girls team title with 49 points, while Carson finished fourth. The Senators scored 149 points and only trailed third-place Nevada Union by 12 in the team standings.


In addition to Works and Brinson, Patty Capistrant was 34th in 21:33, Christa Casci 35th in 21:36, Gloria Sosa was 50th in 22:11, Amanda Benson was 60th in 22:47 and Kristin Neddenriep 63rd in 22:59. A total of 141 runners were entered in the race.


Carson's varsity boys finished 14th as a team with 351 points. Ryan Turner led the Senators, as he ran 18:18 to finish 47th. Doug Holderman was 61st in 18:46, Shelby Moulden was 76th in 19:11, Caleb Carter was 83rd in 19:20, Rusty Turner was 84th in 19:20, Brad Williams was 85th in 29:23 and Scott Wandel was 121st in 21:09.


Reno won the boys team championship with 53 points.


In the JV girls race, Hannah Works finished 14th, Meagan Myer 16th, Andrea Keristead and Sumantha Pitts 23rd for Carson. In the JV boys race, Tyler Bours finished 43rd, Tyler Davies 61st, Greg Saunders 62nd, Ahron Osheroff 71st, Stephen Maples 75th and Mike Gallagher 120th.


The Senators travel to California again this coming weekend for the Stanford Invitational.
