Carson tennis teams roll

The Carson High girls tennis team warmed up for a big week with a 39-6 win over North Valleys on Thursday at Centennial Park.


Carson stayed unbeaten in the Sierra League heading into two critical league matches next week. The Senators will host North Tahoe in a makeup match on Monday and will travel to Northern power Reno High this Thursday.


"We've got two really tough matches," Carson coach Diane Roberts said. "Monday and Thursday are going to be tough. North Tahoe's not going to be easy."


Roberts had the chance to many players some match experience on Thursday. "They got in and they played hard," she said.


Roberts said she continues to be impressed by the play of Lisa Midboe in singles. Midboe swept 6-0, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2. Another highlight was the play of Giorgia Tomba, a foreign exchange student from Italy, who saw her first action when she teamed with Amanda Gohr in doubles. Gohr and Tomba won both of their matches 6-1, 6-3.


Also in singles for Carson, Kelsey Joyce won both of her matches as did Shanni Eng, who won 6-1, 6-4. Michelle Van Epps won 6-1 and Brittany Waltz won 7-5 for Carson as well.


In doubles, Amber Whitworth and Greta Schnaser won 6-1 and Kacey Moseley teamed with Hilary Schlager to win 6-0 and with Melissa Whitcome to win 6-0. Moseley and Whitcome also lost a close 4-6 decision.


In addition in doubles, Kristi Phillipi and Jenny Hood won 6-0, Simone Kuckemeister and Amy Milholland won 6-2 and Cassidy Trapp and Emily Wang lost a 4-6 decision.

Carson boys tennis coach Pat Houlihan also had a chance to play many players in the win. Two of the more exciting matches of the day came in singles where Chris Wear was able to win 7-6 (8-6) and James Pelz was able to win 7-6 (7-3).


Also in singles, Adam Hougton won 6-0 and Jake Newman won 6-1. Other winners in singles included Josh Caron.


In doubles, Jeff Van Epps and Bryt Lewis won 6-1, 6-0, Nathaniel Hamer and Ryan Dwyer won 6-0, Nick Smallman and Todd Crowell won 6-2, 6-2, and Tyler and Alex Wing won 6-3. In addition, Grant Jeppson and Ben Henningsen and Matt Kengott and Wheeler Cowperthwaite played well in doubles.
