BRAD HORN/Nevada Appeal Shirley Cunningham shares a laugh with a former classmate while setting up for Carson High School's class of 1952's 52nd reunion on Thursday afternoon at the Brewery Arts Center.
A group of folks who knew Carson City when will converge on the Brewery Arts Center tonight for their 52nd Carson High School class reunion.
"It will be wonderful," said organizer Shirley Cunningham, 70, of Carson City. She's lived here since she was born in a little house at Curry and William streets.
About 25 of the class of 1952's 42 graduates will attend with their spouses for the three-day event. In all they're expecting - you guessed it - 52 people to attend.
The reunion also will include a 70th-birthday dinner Friday night, dinner at JT's Basque Restaurant Saturday and a visit Sunday to Garth Richard's private car museum.
Hazel Johnson will come from Maui to attend, and high school sweethearts Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Olenslager will make the journey from Las Vegas, Cunningham said. Classmates from Tennessee, Virginia and Dallas will also be in attendance.
Friday night will include the presentation of diplomas to two classmates who never received theirs when they enlisted in the military during the Korean War.
Robert Howard, of Carson City, and Richard Carlisle will be presented diplomas by school board member Norm Scoggin.
"Norman was two years younger than us in school, but his brother, Jim, will be coming," she said.
Cunningham said the class went to high school in the building where Bordewich-Bray Elementary is now, and the Brewery Arts Center was just a brewery.
She remembers when the only casino in town was the Senator Club, owned by the father of classmate Johnson, and when she and her two brothers could play football for hours without seeing a car on the dirt road of Curry Street.
"We're all turning 70 now," Cunningham said proudly.
