Barbecue will honor fire responders

Carson City service clubs will hold a free community barbecue Sunday to honor firefighters, law enforcement and all emergency responders and volunteers who were involved in Waterfall fire efforts.

The event on the state Legislature lawn will include music and a presentation by city and state leaders.

"This is to say, 'Thank you, thank you, thank you' to everybody who helped save our town this last week and helped their friends and neighbors," said Assemblyman Ron Knecht of Carson City. "This is just a big thank you and something of a celebration."

Event organizers Knecht and Mark Frady of the Carson City Kiwanis Club said everyone in the community is invited. They expect up to 2,000 people to attend.

Those who lost their homes are also invited as special guests.

Gov. Kenny Guinn and Assemblyman Mark Amodei may attend. Mayor Ray Masayko and Knecht will speak, and they will provide an opportunity for anyone who would like to make a special presentation to the group to honor the emergency responders and volunteers. Potential speakers should contact Knecht or Frady.

"I hope that some of the people who were blessed to have their homes saved will come down and express their appreciation," Frady said.

Rockin' Rev Ken Haskins will provide entertainment and McClain's Mobile Music will provide the sound system. Carson City is providing the bandstand.

The group has received hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, drinks and condiments from Safeway, Scolari's, Raley's, Albertsons, Ray Tomales Cabinetry and Smith's.

Nearly every city service group is sponsoring the event, including the Jaycees, Kiwanis, Lions Club Host, Lions Club Maverick, Elks, Soroptomists, Sertoma and Rotary clubs. Many other groups are considering sponsorship.
