Obituary: Irvin Gesselman

An inurnment service for Irvin F. "Gus" Gesselman, 91, a Gardnerville resident for the past six years, will be at 3 p.m. Oct. 4 at Eastside Memorial Park in Minden.

Mr. Gesselman died Aug. 26, 2003, at the Mountain View Care Center. He was born June 25, 1912, in Los Angeles, to Francis J. and Carrie Haun Gesselman.

Before moving to Gardnerville, he lived in the Los Angeles area.

Mr. Gesselman started work for United Parcel Service in 1935 and retired in 1974. After a few years, he ran a Helm's Bakery route in Rosemead, Calif., then tried farming near Victorville, Calif.

He was an RSVP volunteer at the Douglas County Senior Center, helping with table set-ups for the noon meal until he became ill in September 2002.

He enjoyed traveling with his friends from UPS and water-skiing. He also loved to play bingo and fish streams in the Sierra near Bishop, Calif., and the Rogue River at Gold Beach, Ore.

Among his survivors are his wife of 70 years, Lola; son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Vera of Gardnerville; grandchildren Deanna Meek-Brien of Louisville, Colo., and Wayne Gesselman of Gardnerville; great-grandchildren Stacy, Shannon, Shane, Chris, Tony, David, Debbie, Mike and Lauren; and great-grandchildren Taylor, Kyle, AJ, CJ and EJ.
