Administrator of the state Buildings and Grounds Division retires

Mike Meizel, administrator of the state Buildings and Grounds Division for 29 years, will retire Aug. 15.

Meizel, 58, is responsible for the maintenance and physical plant management of state buildings, including janitorial services to all state office space and regular maintenance and minor repairs as well as numerous small construction projects. In addition, he manages leases for more than a million square feet of private office space. His staff is also responsible for landscaping maintenance.

In addition, his position operates the Marlette Water system, which supplies water to state government buildings through the Carson City water system, and state government's mail room.

Meizel has been with the agency for 32 years and worked for five governors: Mike O'Callaghan, Bob List, Dick Bryan, Bob Miller and Kenny Guinn. When he began, the state had only about 100,000 square feet of office space.

He said he intends to spend a lot of time fishing, but after taking some time off, he will work in commercial real estate.

No replacement has yet been named for the position, which pays $72,000 a year.
