Fifty-one professionals from across the country have submitted applications to fill the open Carson City manager's position, officials reported this week.

In all, 68 people applied, but some applicants did not meet the qualifications, Human Resources Director Ann Beck said.

Carson City Manager John Berkich left the post he held for more than 12 years at the end of January to take a job as a Washoe County deputy manager.

City supervisors appointed city Development Services Director Andy Burnham as interim manager until a replacement was named. Burnham did not apply for the permanent position, Beck said.

The field of applicants will be narrowed beginning Monday when city supervisors each submit their eight top selections to human resources.

A list will then be compiled within three to four weeks and handed over to members of two selection committees made up of residents and city staff who will whittle the list to seven top applicants, Beck said.

The seven selected picks will then be interviewed by committee members during public meetings beginning at the end of March. Panel evaluations of each applicant will be given to city supervisors who will reduce the number to three and make a final decision April 17.

The deadline to submit applications was last week.

Those included on the panel of city employees and commissioners are: Fire Chief Lou Buckley, Parks and Recreation Director Steve Kastens, Community Development Director Walt Sullivan, Justice Court Judge Robey Willis, Chief Deputy District Attorney Anne Langer, Battalion Chief Stacey Giomi, firefighter Mike Santos and Kathleen King of the recorder's office.

Also Donna DePauw of the Charter Review Committee and Parks and Recreation Commission; Charles DesJardins, of the Storm Drainage Advisory Committee; Karen Grillo, of the library board; Tom Keeton, of the Economic Vitality Coalition; Robert Kennedy, of the Regional Transportation Commission; Tony Marangi, of the Storm Drainage Advisory Committee; Gilbert Yanuck, of the Wildlife Advisory Board; and Linda Johnson, of the Downtown Advisory Panel.

Burnham, Deborah Wiggins, of the Buildings and Permits Department, and Janet Busse of the city manager's office will be on the panel, but will not vote because they do not live in the city.

Community panel members are: Jim Kiernan of the Builders Association of Western Nevada; James Bawden of Landmark Homes; Don Bruce, a business owner; Robert Curtis, former chairman of a personnel board; Janice Ayres of the Nevada Rural Counties Retired and Senior Volunteer Program; Dan Mooney of the Redevelopment Advisory Citizens Committee and the C Hill Foundation; former Mayor Marv Teixeira; Larry Osborne of the Chamber of Commerce; Maxine Nietz, business owner; Lee Radtke, retired manager; Franklin Steinberg, personnel analyst; Craig Swope of Carson Access Television; John McKenna of the school board; and Isabel Young of the Humane Society.
