Leona Jessina McCarty Monroe

A celebration of life for Leona Jessina McCarty Monroe, 75, a longtime community volunteer, will be at 2 p.m. Jan. 10, in the Dayton Community Center.

Mrs. Monroe died Dec. 3, 2003, at Mountain View Care Center in Carson City. She was born Aug. 3, 1928, in Los Angeles.

She worked for organizations including the U.S. government, IBM and Lockheed as a clerk-typist, keypunch operator, bookkeeper and accountant. She retired from the Kennedy Co., as a computer component manufacturer, where she spent 15 years as a material planner. After moving to Dayton in 1988, she worked as a volunteer for many organizations, including the Friends of the Dayton Valley Library, Dayton Valley Days and Central Lyon County Youth Connection. Recognizing their contributions as founders and continuing volunteers, in 1999 the Friends of the Dayton Valley Library made her and her husband life members.

Among her survivors are her husband, Albert, and son, Michael, both of Dayton and grandchildren Tasha Monroe, Aiyana Monroe and Mike Monroe of Pasadena, Calif.

Cremation will be at Reno Memorial Cremation & Burial Society.
