Treasure Hunt kicks off today

The third annual hunt, sponsored by the Nevada Appeal and presented by Jesse Olson and Nevada Day, Inc. begins today when the first in a series of 15 clues appears in the Nevada Appeal. The clues will highlight Nevada's colorful past (and present) and lead a clever participant to the treasure hidden on public property somewhere in Carson City, Churchill, Douglas, Lyon, Storey or Washoe counties.

The treasure is a small acrylic medallion containing the Nevada Day Treasure Hunt message. It will be found in a protective leather pouch, but will not be buried and no structure will need to be disturbed or climbed to find it.

It only took Carson City resident Bill Loncar two clues to find the Nevada Day Treasure last year.

Loncar, 46, found the medallion hanging behind the historical marker for McCone's Foundary in Silver City.

This year's lucky hunter can win by returning the treasure to the Nevada Appeal offices in Carson City on Mallory Way. The clever sleuth can win the cash and a plaque commemorating the event.

The treasure hunt is organized by Olson, owner of Sierra Nevada Electric, with help from the Nevada Appeal and Nevada Day, Inc. Details including official rules and search etiquette are available from Sierra Nevada Electric and may be found in the Nevada Appeal during the course of the treasure hunt.
