Douglas (6-2 overall, 5-1 league) moves into second place in league with the win and will have a chance at first place when it plays South Tahoe (6-0) on Saturday in Minden. The Vikings are the only team to beat the Tigers in league this season (2-0).
The Huskies went up 1-0 in the 6th minute, stunning a Douglas team which had dominated in the opening minutes, according to coach Fred Schmidt. The Tigers pressed hard after that but weren't able to get anything going offensively before halftime.
"We were trying hard to get that tying goal and we reverted back to getting impatient," Schmidt said. "At halftime we talked about possessing the ball and stepping it up on defense."
In the 44th minute, Porter found Bradshaw, who then slotted a ball past the Reno keeper to tie it at 1. Douglas had several chances to get the go-ahead goal after that but had to wait until late in the half to finally get it. That's when Molly Hernandez' shot deflected off Porter and into the net, which proved to be the winning goal. Schmidt said his team could've easily scored two or three more goals in the second half.
"If we play how we did in the first half, we're going to struggle against a team like South Tahoe," Schmidt said. "But if we play like we did in the second half, we'll be ready for them. It was the best soccer we have played this season."
SOUTH TAHOE 5, CARSON 0
The Vikings scored four goals in the first 28 minutes of the game in the easy win over the Senators, the defending Sierra League champions.
Carson is now 3-3 in league and 3-4-1 overall. The Senators are still in third place in front of Reno, which is 3-2 after its 2-1 loss to Douglas. The Huskies, though, still have a game in hand over the Senators and have already beaten them 3-0 this season.
There weren't many highlights for the Senators against South Tahoe, which dominated from the start. The Vikings are in first place in the league at 6-0.
"I think South Tahoe won almost every 50-50 ball," Carson coach Mike Popp said. "Our intensity is really not there right now. I was expecting more out of South Tahoe since they beat Douglas. But I think Douglas has more skill than Tahoe and are still the team to beat. But Tahoe is good. They are much better than last year. They control the ball a lot better than in previous years."
In three games against South Tahoe, Douglas and Reno this season, Carson has been outscored 12-0. Those are the three teams most likely to finish above the Senators in the league standings. The top four teams qualify for the Northern 4A playoffs. Carson plays Hug on Saturday.
