"Living with Wild Horses" program to be discussed

The Bureau of Land Management Carson City Field Office and the Pine Nut Wild Horse Posse, a local citizens' group in Douglas County, will host a public meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the BLM-Carson City Field Office, 5665 Morgan Mill Road.

The BLM and Jim Evans of the Posse invite residents of the Pinion Hills area of Carson City to attend and begin a dialogue on "Living with Wild Horses," a program of managing wild horses that drift out of BLM's Pine Nut Mountain Herd Management Area onto private lands of Carson City and Douglas County.

The BLM and the Pine Nut Wild Horse Posse, a group of volunteers, have made progress during 2001 in the Fish Springs area of Douglas County in herding wild horses out of the urban interface area, which serves to protect private property and delay costly BLM horse gathers.

The BLM-Carson City Field Office has been eager to find ways to involve residents who want to help manage wild horses in the Pine Nuts with BLM guidance and subject to the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act.

Evans of the Pine Nut Wild Horse Posse and several BLM managers and wild horse specialists will attend the meeting. The Posse will be prepared to sign up volunteers who wish to assist in future management of the herd.
