Galena boys win Reed title

Tim Koepsell and Stephen Pottey cracked the top 10 to lead a balanced Galena High School's boys to championship team honors at the Reed Invitational cross country meet on Friday afternoon in Sparks.


Koepsell placed third as he ran 17 minutes, 45 seconds over Reed's 5,000-meter course and Pottey ran 18:20 to place sixth as Galena outdistanced Reno to capture the boys team title. The Grizzlies, who had a 1:42 gap separating their five scoring runners, edged Reno by a 52-61 score.


Jonathan Cardenas of Reno won the varsity boys race in a time of 17:18.51.


Dayton's Nick Pribilia finished 15th with a time of 19:08.


Reno's Collier Lawrence won the varsity girls race with a 20:35.91 effort and the Huskies ran away with the team title by a 32-46 margin over Lowry.


Chantel Williams and Emilie Wark placed seventh and ninth respectively for Galena.


Carson's Janine Stone won the J.V. girls race as she ran 17:44.06 for 2.3 miles. Carson teammate Sara Shaw also placed third in 18:07 to help the Senators edge South Tahoe 34-36 for the J.V. girls team championship.


Carson's Jason Strull placed fifth in the J.V. boys race with a time of 14:59 and Dayton's Spencer Paul was sixth in 15:06.


Carson's varsity boys and girls teams compete today at the high-powered Great Race of the Great Bay of the Great American Cross Country Festival in San Francisco.
