DAYTON - Western and Native American folklore will launch the Summer Reading Celebration at the Dayton Library.
Tom McCormack of Oregon will tell stories and sing songs at the kickoff event starting at 10:30 a.m. Thursday. State Sen. Mark Amodei, R-Carson City, and Maureen Dini, wife of Assembly Speaker Joe Dini, will speak at 10 a.m.
The Summer Reading Celebration will continue through Aug. 5. Parents can sign children up to have the books the children read notated on the library wall, Lyon County Library Director Kiki Freer-Parsons said.
"It's a way for a child to maintain and improve reading skills in summer in a fun, non-competitive environment," Freer-Parsons said.
The Dayton Library's program works in conjunction with the statewide READiscover Nevada program. Children are encouraged to read books about Nevada history. The Dayton Library has numerous books touching on themes that represent different elements of the state.
"READiscover is a way to increase children's knowledge in a non-academic way," Freer-Parsons said.
Along with seeing their reading progress charted on the library wall, children who participate will receive a certificate.
Summer Reading Celebration is more about kids reading on their own but they may sit in on the weekly storytelling session at 10:30 a.m. Thursdays at the Dayton Library.
The Thursday event and signing up for the celebration are free and open to the public.
