Sparks receives cross country honor

Carson High School freshman Shanna Sparks has been honored by All-Stater Sports in the magazine's 1999 Cross Country Regional Girls' Dream Team.

Sparks received third-team honors for the West Region, which is represented by Nevada, California, Alaska, Arizona, Hawaii, Idaho, Oregon, Washington and Utah. The magazine selected six teams of five runners each.

Sparks, who won the Northern 4A Zone race and took second at the state meet, was one of two freshmen out of the 30 runners selected. The other was Laura Spordone of Phoenix, who also made the third team.

Only six freshmen were selected among the 180 female runners representing six regions nationwide.

The only other Nevada selection was Henderson's Abby Miller, the four-time state cross country champ from Green Valley High. She was given a first-team selection.
