A 26-year-old Castro Valley, Calif., woman suffered a badly broken leg in a motorcycle accident mid-day Monday near the Kirkwood Ski Resort in Alpine County, the California Highway Patrol reported.

June Lee was flown by Careflight to Washoe Medical Center, where she was listed in satisfactory condition, though she will require extensive surgery to her leg, a hospital official said.

Lee was a passenger on a 1990 Harley-Davidson motorcycle that wrecked at 11:40 a.m. in holiday congestion east of Kirkwood Meadows Drive near the resort.

Motorcyclist Henry Wong, 54, of Fremont, Calif., couldn't stop in time when the vehicle in front of him braked hard because of traffic. Wong's Harley struck the rear of a 1997 Dodge Dakota driven by Phillip Cunningham, 29, of San Jose.

Both vehicles were westbound.

Wong lost control of the motorcycle and both he and Lee were thrown from the Harley, the CHP report said.

Wong was taken to Barton Memorial Hospital in South Lake Tahoe with minor injuries. Cunningham was not injured.

A garage fire Monday afternoon near Wellington caused extensive damage to a two-story house, a fire official said.

The fire started in the garage and then spread to the attic, burning off the roof, said Deputy Chief Steve Eisele of the East Fork Fire and Paramedic District.

East Fork sent one engine, a brush truck and two water tenders from Douglas County to join volunteer engines from the Smith Valley Fire Department at the Lyon County fire.

Eisele did not have immediate access to the address or property owner names. He said the fire was east of the Highway 208 and Highway 338 junction.

"The fire burned the roof off the structure and spread to a couple acres of grass and shrub," Eisele said.

The rest of the house apparently did not burn down, though field reports to Eisele indicate there was extensive damage. The cause was not immediately known.
