Obituary: Richard L. Hubbard

A memorial service for Richard L. Hubbard, 72, will be held Saturday, March 25, at 2 p.m. at the Carson Valley United Methodist Church in Gardnerville, Pastor Pete Nelson will officiate.

Mr. Hubbard died March 18 at the Virginia Creek Skilled Nursing Facility in Gardnerville.

He was born Dec. 23, 1927 in Painesville, Ohio, to William and Helen Hubbard. Mr. Hubbard was in the U.S. Navy in World War II. He attended Ohio Wesleyan University, transferring to the University of Michigan where he received his bachelor's degree in forestry with a major in wildlife. During summers in high school and college, he worked as a commercial fisherman on Lake Erie. He went on and received a master's of science in range management at Utah State University and further graduate work in forest ecology at University California Berkley. Mr. Hubbard worked for the Pacific Southwest Forest and Range Experiment Station, a research arm of the U.S. Forest Service from 1952 until his retirement in 1986.

He conducted, and was in charge of both range and wildlife research in California, Hawaii and the Pacific Islands and retired as Assistant Director in charge of long range planning and research application.

Mr. Hubbard served on the Governor's Salmon/Steelhead Advisory Committee, The Delta Environmental Advisory Committee, chaired the West-Coast Salmon Advisory Committee to the Pacific Fisheries Management Council, and served as Executive Secretary to the Western Agricultural Research Committee. After his retirement from the U.S. Forest Service in 1986 he served as Executive Director of the California Natural Resources Federation, the state affiliate of the National Wildlife Federation, until moving from the Bay Area to the Carson Valley in 1989.

Since moving to the Carson Valley, Mr. Hubbard has been actively involved in the Gardnerville/Carson Valley Kiwanis Club, High Sierra Fly Casters, Carson Valley Tennis Club and the Carson Valley United Methodist Church. He loved fly fishing, playing tennis and was well known for his computer expertise.

Surviving Mr. Hubbard are his wife of 44 years Shirley A. Hubbard of Gardnerville, daughter Denise Frueh of Gardnerville, daughter Teresa Miranda of Susanville Calif, sister Marion Babbitt of Chico Calif and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Helen and William Hubbard and brother Marshall Hubbard.
