A funeral for Michael Anthony Lombardo Jr., 70, a Gardnerville resident for 25 years, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Gardnerville.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. today at FitzHenry's Carson Valley Funeral Home
Mr. Lombardo died of cancer at his home on Dec. 13, 1999. He was born Aug. 9, 1929, in Chicago, Ill., to Michael and Margaret Lombardo.
He joined the U.S. Army in 1948 and was a member of the 15th Constabulary stationed in Germany. Four years later he returned to Blue Island, Ill., where he and Arlene Mae Miller were married.
The newlyweds moved to Southern California in January 1953, and in 1954, Mr. Lombardo became an officer with the Los Angeles Police Department.
The couple raised four children and were foster parents to 11 others.
When Mr. Lombardo retired in 1974, the couple moved to Gardnerville, where they built a log home.
He was a security agent for Bently Nevada Corp. for 15 years.
He had many interests, including classic car restoration and airplanes. He built, tested and flew a Cassutt race plane he named Freebird.
Among his survivors are his wife Arlene, sons Michael III and Dominic and daughters Jacalyn and Caralyn, all of Gardnerville; sister Joan Schaefer of Illinois; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; eight nephews and nieces; and numerous in-laws.
