Fishing report for week of 01/26

BLUE LAKES (UPPER AND LOWER): No report.

BOCA RESERVOIR: No report.

CAPLES LAKE: No report.

DAVIS LAKE: No report.

EAGLE LAKE: No report.

FRENCHMAN RESERVOIR: According to Wiggin's Trading Post in Chilcoot, Calif., "The lake was free of ice except at the dam. An angler from Doyle, Calif. caught a 4-pound rainbow with nightcrawlers at the Lunker Point boat launch area. A 16-inch rainbow was taken at Big Cove."

INDIAN CREEK RESERVOIR: No report.

PYRAMID LAKE: The Gilly Sporting Goods Store in Sparks reported, "The wind caused some problems over the weekend. It was blowing very hard on Sunday. The boaters were doing better than the shore fishermen. They were trolling 40 feet down in deeper water with Flatfish, Kwikfish, Rapala and Tor-P-Do lures.

The fly fishermen were scoring at "The Nets" and at "Popcorn."

Reports of a couple of 10-pounders, several 8-pounders and lots of six-pounders."

RED LAKE: No report.

SACRAMENTO RIVER: No report.

SILVER LAKE: No report.

STAMPEDE RESERVOIR: No report.

LAKE TAHOE - North Shore: Easy limits of average sized Mackinaw trout, up to about 4-6 pounds. Fishing in 250-450 feet of water, very early in the morning, in front of Kings Beach. Trolling with Herring Dodger flasher blades with pearl-colored Apex lures, live minnows or three-inch, blue-colored, rubber minnows.

Mickey Daniels of Mickey's Big Mack Charters said that his clients were catching, tagging and releasing about 6-8 Mackinaw on each trip.

LAKE TAHOE - South Shore: Mike Nielsen of the Tahoe Topliners of South Lake Tahoe reported, '"We went out last Thursday for a couple of hours until we got blown off the lake. We caught two German browns about three pounds each, one two-pound rainbow and a Mackinaw that weighed seven pounds. We were toplining the sand bars in front of South Shore. We used No. 7, black/gold-colored, Count-Down Rapala lures."

TOPAZ LAKE: Linda Fields of the Topaz Lake Marina checked in on Monday morning and said, "It's raining like mad and there's not a soul out there today."

She said that the boat fishing has been outstanding. Lots of limits of rainbows up to 1.5 pounds. Some boats were in and out with full limits in less than two hours. They were trolling near the surface in the middle of the lake. The best lures were black/gold, black/silver, rainbow, orange or Chartreuse-colored No. 5 or No. 7 Rapalas.

Fields reported that shore fishing has been very slow. Not much success.

WALKER LAKE: Lived up to its recent status of being "Spotty" as far as fishing success. Some anglers reported fair fishing, others not so good. Last Wednesday, Bob "Slick" McCulloch and Don Quilici of Carson City fished with Bob Tompkins of the Walker Lake Guide Services of Hawthorne. The three fishermen caught a total of five cutthroat for the day, with the largest weighing about 5 pounds. They trolled near the bottom in 80 feet of water. They were using large, broken-back, Fire Tiger-colored, Flatfish lures.

WILDHORSE RESERVOIR: Monday morning, Dennis Dunn of the Wild Horse Resort reported, "It's snowing like hell and we have four inches of new snow. The reservoir has 18 inches of ice. It was -2 degrees yesterday morning."

Dunn said that ice fishermen were catching lots of limits of rainbows up to 22 inches and that the perch were "going nuts."

They were using worms in combination with party-sized marshmallows, Power Bait or yellow corn.

He reported that three anglers from Boise, Idaho caught close to 500 perch in one day over the weekend. They were ice fishing over the hot springs on the west side of the reservoir and over the hot springs on the east side.

The annual Ice Fishing Derby is scheduled for Feb. 19-21.

There will be a perch fishing derby on March 11-12.
