Fifth grade student wins poster contest

A Smith Valley School fifth-grader is the winner of the 2000 Nevada Arbor Day Poster Contest.

His winning entry, "Trees are Terrific in All Shapes and Sizes" will represent Nevada at the Arbor Day National Poster Contest in Nebraska, sponsored by the National Arbor Day Foundation.

As the Nevada state winner, Seth received a $100 savings bond awarded by the Nevada Division of Forestry's Urban Forestry Program, the Nevada Shade Tree Council and the U.S. Forest Service.

Three regional winners, Abram Knight of Lovelock Elementary, Kara Nye, Mountain View Elementary School in Elko and Diana Dones, Walter V., Long Elementary School in Las Vegas will each receive $50 savings bonds. Seth's teacher, Kimi Smith, was awarded a "Trees, a Pocket Full of Knowledge' and a $100 gift certificate from "Learning is Fun" and the Nevada Natural Resources Education Council for educational supplies.

The regional winners' teachers will receive $35 gift certificates.
